Safety and Crisis Response
Effective date: 2026-11-07
This page explains how Ithren tells you that you are talking to AI, how we respond when someone may be at risk of suicide or self-harm, and how reports are handled by people. It applies to all users in every region where the Service is available, and it is part of our Community Guidelines.
1. You are always talking to AI
- Every character on Ithren is played by AI. Characters are not real people, and no human is writing their replies.
- At the top of every conversation, the app shows: "You are chatting with an AI character, not a real person."
- While you keep chatting, the app inserts the same reminder into the conversation again at least every 3 hours. The 3 hours are counted from the previous reminder (or from your first message in that conversation), and the reminder appears just before your next message after that time has passed. Time you spend away from the app also counts, so you will see the reminder when you come back after a long break.
- These reminders are shown by the app itself. They are free, are not sent to the AI model and do not change how the character replies.
2. When a message suggests suicide or self-harm
- Messages you send are checked automatically for signs of suicidal thoughts or self-harm, using keyword matching and, where available, our moderation service.
- When a message matches, the app shows a notice right in the conversation with crisis resources:
- In the United States: call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (24/7, free).
- Anywhere else: find a free local helpline at findahelpline.com.
- If you are in immediate danger: call your local emergency number now.
- The notice also reminds you that characters are played by AI and are not a substitute for professional help.
- Your message is not blocked and the conversation is not cut off, so you are never left without a response at a difficult moment.
- Characters are not allowed to promote, encourage or give instructions for suicide or self-harm. Our Community Guidelines forbid this content, and replies are moderated.
- For safety reporting, we keep only a count of how many times this notice was shown and when. We do not keep a separate copy of the message for this purpose and do not use it to identify you.
3. Reporting and human review
- You can report any character, AI message, creator, or publicly shared illustration or video from inside the app. See "How to report" in our Community Guidelines.
- A person reviews every report within 48 hours. Reports about self-harm or minors are handled first, and a reported character in these categories may be hidden immediately while it is reviewed.
- You will be notified of the outcome in the app. Reports are confidential.
- If you cannot use the app, email [email protected].
4. Changes and contact
We may update this page as our safety measures improve or as laws change. Questions about this page: [email protected].
